Google Business Profile: The Free Tool Most Local Businesses Get Wrong
Why it matters more than you think
When someone nearby searches for what you do, the map results appear above every website — including yours. That box of three businesses, with reviews and a call button, is powered by Google Business Profile. For many local businesses it generates more calls than their actual website.
It's completely free. The only cost is the hour it takes to set up properly — and most businesses skip exactly the steps that matter.
The setup steps that actually move the needle
Claim and verify your profile at business.google.com, then fill out every single field: exact business name, correct category (be specific — 'Landscaper' not 'Contractor'), hours, service area, and a description written for customers, not keywords.
Add real photos — at least ten to start. Businesses with photos get substantially more direction requests and calls than those without. Show your work, your team, and your vehicle or storefront.
Reviews: ask, and make it easy
Reviews are the single biggest factor in whether someone calls you or the competitor below you. Ask every happy customer, right after the job, and send them your direct review link (found in your profile dashboard) so it takes them thirty seconds.
Respond to every review. Thank the happy customers by name, and answer complaints calmly and professionally — future customers read your responses as much as the reviews themselves.
Keep it alive
A stale profile sinks. Update your hours before holidays, add photos of recent jobs monthly, and post an occasional update. Google rewards active profiles with better placement — and customers trust a business that looks open and busy.
Your profile and your website work as a pair: the profile gets you found, the website closes the deal. Make sure the website link on your profile points to a fast, mobile-friendly page that matches what the profile promises.
