5 Things a Website Must Do to Win You Customers
1. Answer 'what do you do?' in five seconds
Visitors decide almost instantly whether they're in the right place. Your headline should say what you do and who you do it for — plainly, not cleverly. 'Landscaping and lawn care in Frederick County' beats 'Crafting outdoor experiences' every single time.
Test it: show your homepage to someone for five seconds, then ask them what your business does. If they can't answer, your headline isn't working.
2. Make contacting you effortless
A visible phone number, a short contact form, and a clear call to action on every page. Every extra step between 'I'm interested' and 'I reached out' costs you customers.
Keep forms short. Name, phone or email, and 'what do you need?' is enough to start a conversation. You can gather the details later — the goal of the form is to start the conversation, not finish it.
And when someone does reach out, respond fast. A reply within the hour wins jobs; a reply two days later often finds the customer already booked elsewhere.
3. Prove you're real
People buy from businesses they trust, and trust is built with evidence — not slogans. Real photos of your actual work and your actual team. Real reviews with real names. Real examples with real results.
Stock photos of smiling models in hard hats do the opposite: they signal that you had nothing real to show. One genuine photo of a finished job is worth a dozen stock images.
4. Work perfectly on a phone
More than half your visitors are on mobile — for many local businesses it's closer to three quarters. If they have to pinch, zoom, scroll sideways, or hunt for your phone number, they're gone.
Your phone number should be tappable, your buttons big enough for a thumb, and your text readable without zooming. This isn't a nice-to-have anymore; it's the main way people experience your business online.
5. Load fast and stay maintained
A slow or broken site silently loses business. Visitors leave before the page finishes loading, forms break without anyone noticing, and outdated information — old prices, old hours, old services — actively misleads the customers who do stay.
Keep it fast, keep it updated, and keep it secure. If you'd rather not think about any of that, that's exactly what our $50/month Website Care plan is for: updates, backups, security monitoring, and small changes handled for you, so the site keeps working while you run your business.
